Significantly higher indicative price from Agrico for the 2023 harvest

30 April 2024 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 13 comments

Seed potato trading house Agrico has announced the average indicative price to 'its' growers. This amounts to €43,20 per 100 kilos in the 28 millimeter upwards, while Agrico also presents its own indicative price for the oversize sorting due to the large amount of oversize from the 2023 harvest. In addition, the cooperative was ultimately able to deliver almost all contract volumes.

Yesterday (Monday April 29), Agrico announced the indicative price for the 2023 harvest to growers. Every year the cooperative presents the 28 millimeter upwards, or a price for the fully delivered yield per hectare, including the delivered excess size. This indicative price amounts to €43,20 per 100 kilos. Last year (harvest 2022) that was €35,50. The indicative price for the seed potato size is €51,40 per 100 kilos.

Own indicative price for oversize
Due to the large amount of oversize this year, there is also its own indicative price for the oversize sorting. This amounts to €28,50 per 100 kilos. This price includes a bandwidth of approximately €4 downwards for the excess size supplied as consumption and €4 upwards for the excess size supplied as seed potatoes.

Nearly all contract volumes delivered
According to the cooperative, sales this season were very challenging. Overseas exports were disappointing due to low production in the seed potato size, while prices rose sharply as a result. The European market, on the other hand, was demanding all year round and high prices were achieved here too. Despite the seed potato shortage, Agrico was 'ultimately able to deliver almost the quantities of the contract volumes', the trading house said in the message to its growers. General manager Mark Zuidhof indicates in the message that the entire stock of seed potatoes has been sold in size and therefore also a large part of the excess size. "The demand was so high that we were also able to sell a large part of the excess size as seed potatoes."

The average yield per hectare decreases by 5% and amounts to 40,5 tons per hectare. The percentage of excess size was 36%. In the 2022 harvest this was still 14,5%.

Growing season 2024: rising price
Zuidhof also comments on the market for the 2024 harvest. Growers can expect a rising price again. "The sentiment for the 2024 harvest is positive. In our negotiations with the industries, we see a further rising price. In addition, following the product group meetings, Agrico has decided to be cautious in the volumes that are recorded."

Just for my clarity. As a cons grower in the pool I get (I think) €35 or more. The seed potato grower therefore receives €5 to €8 more from Agrico. No wonder no one wants to grow it anymore. You can easily lose that yield with lower tons, labor and extra costs!

The fries potato has been paid better in the last 2 years. Sometimes it's the other way around. It is very important that the seed potato farmer also earns money and continues to grow seed potatoes. I think that the fluctuations for seed potatoes are less than for French fries potatoes.

When I see what the seed potato barons drive and work with, the money must be coming in in droves.

There should have been at least a 5, especially considering that consumer growers pay at least 75 cents for his/her seed potatoes.

So it appears that there is a lot of money at stake again.

Almost all contract volume delivered, says Agrico.
I hear different sounds in the corridors.
I hear that chip factories are taking Agrico to court for not honoring agreements. Volumes are currently not being delivered for which there were agreements. Where the chip factory had already concluded a contract with the consumer grower. Who is going to pay for this. Soon Agrico will be called Lamb Weston or Clarebout. Hopefully it doesn't come to that

you have to do, they can do very little, it is all in the NAO trading conditions. As long as they have followed it themselves, they cannot do anything.

Desiree, publishing hearsay as truth is not smart and is also slander. You shouldn't want to. And the members must also want to take that over.
