Potato price on the board, but no quotes

6 August 2024 - Niels van der Boom - 10 comments

The agricultural fairs of Emmeloord and Goes themselves put a potato price on the boards. This came to the surprise of many. The organizations emphasize that it is not a listing. This is an indicative price. In this way, the regional stock exchanges are trying to shed light on the darkness since the lack of PotatoNL listings.

The first prices for the 2024 harvest from Beurs Emmeloord and Goes amount to €22 to €25 per 100 kilos. For potatoes suitable for fresh chips/peeling (particularly the Agria variety), a price of €30 to €40 is quoted.

When announcing the price, LNCN emphasizes that it is not a quotation, but rather reporting a lowest and highest transaction price for potatoes suitable for fries, delivered ex-field.

PotatoNL
At the end of July it was announced that the Dutch potato sector would have to do without PotatoNL for a while, which was last recorded on July 8. The organization announced that the parties must first sit down to discuss further about the future of this listing. This not only concerns details, but also larger issues. What exactly they are remains a guesswork, because the parties behind PotatoNL are not disclosing anything. Chairman André Hoogendijk showed up Boerenbusiness know that all parties (growers, traders and processors) still support the quotations. Only time will tell whether this is still the case with the passing of PotatoNL. Since 2017, all parties in the Netherlands have jointly recorded one quotation.

Behind the scenes, work on a (temporary) solution has reportedly been going on for some time. The input required for this will probably come from within our own ranks. LNCN reports that prices are reported that are known to the stock exchanges. In theory, the scholarship committee can go to the DCA PAT Index look for the transactions made by potato processors. In practice this is different, because the input via that platform is still very limited.

High price
With the first listing in Emmeloord, the stock exchange is relatively high, looking at prices elsewhere in Europe. Viaverda/Fiwap today communicated a price for early potatoes of €15 to €20 per 100 kilos. Belgapom recorded €22 last Friday. The mood is described as lackluster, with supply exceeding demand.
