Both Viaverda/Fiwap from Belgium and RNM from France put a plus of €7 on the board for Fontane today (Tuesday 5 January). This makes it clear that the potato market is moving again after a few quiet weeks.
Viaverda/Fiwap is putting €25 on the board for the Fontane and Challenger varieties. RNM also came up with €25 for Fontane. This means that the countries south of us are above the first PotatoNL quotation of the season that was published yesterday. The Dutch were namely holding on to €20 to €25 for the rounder chip varieties, which Fontane is one of, and are therefore lagging behind the market.
Interesting is Viaverda's explanation of the listing. "Several middlemen and processors are active on the market. The supply of free potatoes is limited. There is little to do for export as a result of the higher prices", writes Viaverda. You could reasonably assume that Belgapom will also take a step next Friday. This season it has only happened more often that Belgapom (in which the processors are represented) does not follow the line of Viaverda (in which the growers are represented).
