The potato processors stepped it up a notch in December. Processing for the month of December is well above the five-year average. Furthermore, there appeared to be an error in the figures for November.
In December, 343.500 tons of potatoes were processed, according to new figures from the Association for the Potato Processing Industry (Vavi). The five-year average for December is 322.800 tons and last year this month it was 296.500 tons. Just over half of the potatoes, namely 51,4% or 176.500 tons, that were processed last month came from abroad. The processing figure for November was 300.600 tons, but that appears to be incorrect. The actual processing for November has been adjusted to 327.300 tons. The other figures were correct.
The production of pre-fried chips in December was 140.700 tons and 44.500 tons of other products were made. The processing yield was 53,9%. That is slightly better than average for this month.
