The two potato companies Schaap Holland from Biddinghuizen (Flevoland) and Landjuweel from Oosternieland (Groningen) are going to merge. Both parties announced this today (10 April). The companies themselves call it 'an important step in the world of table potatoes.'
By joining forces, a combined processing and packaging capacity of 185.000 tons of potatoes per year is created. Both parties are strong in washing, sorting and packaging potatoes. Schaap Holland also processes potatoes into chilled products.
Terms & conditions
The seed potato division of Schaap Holland is not involved in the merger. It concerns only the table potatoes and chilled products, which are marketed under the name Poldergoud. This is according to potato director Hans Geling of Schaap. "The grounds and buildings of both families have also been kept outside the proposed merger. In addition, our company has its own transport division, which is also separate from this. At Landjuweel, this has been disconnected."
Both parties signed a letter of intent this week and informed their works council, staff, customers and growers. Discussions will continue in the coming period to assess how the various departments can work together. For growers, these changes will probably not come to light until 2026, as the new potato season has already started in full swing.
Growth in a shrinking market
Schaap currently employs 125 people. Landjuweel employs 35. Last year, owner Bram Werkman took a step back, although he is still the owner. The daily management was transferred to the general manager and two people who are responsible for purchasing and sales. "At Schaap, we have a new generation of three people who also want to continue with the company. This merger must therefore secure the future of both companies," says Geling. "The table potato market is shrinking, so you cannot avoid such a step in order to remain interesting for, for example, retail."
