Potato prices give growers little reason to quickly sell the last potatoes. Waiting to sell ensures that more remains above the market and that is generally not good for pricing. On the other hand, the drought has not really got a grip on the market yet. That could give the market a boost in the remaining period until the new harvest.
The DCA EU-4 Potato Index took another hit. Belgium and France are now both at €7,50 for Fontane. The French contribution is therefore €2,50 lower than a week earlier. At least for the time being, the lower limit seems to have been reached at €7,50. For that kind of money, they can always get away, growers reason. Certainly if the rain that is predicted for next week does not fall, something crazy could still happen in June. If you have to do business, for example because things are going well, it is not easy to find a buyer. After two seasons in which everything that even remotely resembled a potato was taken by the processors to cut into chips, the wind is now blowing from a completely different direction. They have to be quality potatoes and the processors want to make a profit in the factory.
The DCA EU-4 Potato Index has fallen by €1,14 to €9,85 per 100 kilos. This means that the index is still searching for solid ground under its feet. With the difference that there is still between the German and Dutch quotations on the one hand and the Belgian and French on the other, it is not yet certain that the DCA EU-4 Potato Index will not fall further.
