Both potato and frozen potato stocks in the United States are down from last year, according to the latest figures from the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) and the USDA. This has led to a decline in both factory processing and overall consumption.
Potato stocks in the United States were down 6% in April compared to the same month last year. As of April 1 this year, the amount of potatoes in storage was 5,94 million tons. This accounted for 31% of this year’s total potato production, which is the same as in 2024. Consumption so far this season is 13,15 million tons, which is 4% lower than in the same period last year. Storage losses also amounted to 948.000 tons, a slight decrease of 2% compared to last year. Potato processing by factories in eight states, including Idaho and Washington, was 6,67 million tons through April, which is 5% lower than in April 2024.
Major differences in regionally stored fries
Inventories of frozen potatoes in U.S. cold stores showed a slight decline at the end of April this year compared to a year ago. Total inventory stood at around 598.000 tons, down more than 2% from the same period last year.
Regionally, the differences are large. For example, the stock of fries in the West South Central region (Texas and Oklahoma) increased by 86% compared to a year earlier, to more than 11.200 tons. In the Pacific region (California and Washington), the stock of fries decreased by 15% to 167.000 tons. In the Middle Atlantic (including Pennsylvania), the stock of fries even decreased by 32%, to 14.200 tons.
Smaller inventories
For other frozen potato products, such as wedges and cubes, the differences are even greater. In the South Atlantic (e.g. Florida), stocks increased by 34% to 4.700 tons, while the Pacific showed a sharp decline of 38% to 20.000 tons. In total, stocks of frozen potatoes in the Pacific region amounted to 30 tons on April 2025, 187.500. A decrease of 18% compared to March this year. In the Mountain region (Idaho and Colorado), stocks stood at 10.900 tons, almost the same as a year earlier.
