Analysis Potatoes

Potato quality still not guaranteed

6 August 2025 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Viaverda announced the results of trial harvests in Fontane, Amora, and Sinora this week. For the early varieties, there are significant differences between the irrigated and unirrigated plots. In Fontane, irrigation made much less of a difference. However, a different problem is emerging in some plots there.

The average yield for Amora is 37,8 tons per hectare. The four plots that experienced one or two periods of storage averaged 48 tons per hectare, with a range of 32 to 59 tons per hectare. The four plots that did not receive any artificial rain averaged 28 tons per hectare, with a range of 17 to 37 tons per hectare. Since the last trial harvest on July 9th, they have barely grown. The final yield for Amora, in the multi-year average, is 44 tons per hectare. Viaverda notes that the quality of the potatoes was excellent. Tare was limited to a few green tubers.

For the mid-early variety Sinora, the average yield in Viaverda's pre-harvest harvest is 41,4 tons per hectare, with a range of 29 to 55 tons per hectare. The highest yield was achieved in an irrigated plot, but some non-irrigated plots are also exceeding 45 tons per hectare. Calculated in growing days, the yield is slightly lower than the multi-year average of 41 tons per hectare. Despite the crop having an average of 118 growing days, Viaverda believes there is still potential. Calculated in date, the yield is well above the multi-year average of 33 tons per hectare. The quality of the potatoes is excellent, and hardly any tare was found.

Viaverda also conducted its first trial harvest in Fontane. The average planting date for the 35 sampled plots is April 12th, more than two weeks earlier than the multi-year average. During the trial harvest, the potatoes had 107 growing days. As with the early varieties, the number of stems is lower than average, and there are also fewer tubers under the tubers. There are about two to three fewer tubers per plant than expected.

The average yield is 39 tons per hectare, with a range of 20 to 58 tons per hectare. Of this, 30 tons are in size 50. This brings the yield to the five-year average. There are slightly more concerns about the quality of Fontane. The average underwater weight is 372 grams. However, one plot with second growth yielded more, 288 grams. Second growth was found in three of the 38 plots. "The foliage growth in June was probably too slow, causing the temperature in the ridge to rise too high," writes Viaverda. Growth cracks were found in one plot.
