Avebe strikes a blow in Poland and acquires flake company Solan

19 August 2025 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 3 comments

Royal Avebe is entering the potato flake and granulate market. The Veendam-based starch potato processor cooperative announced today (Tuesday, August 19) that it is acquiring the Polish company Solan. Avebe indicates its intention to further develop potato cultivation in Poland.

With this deal, Avebe strengthens its international market position and further expands its product portfolio. Solan is the market leader in potato flakes and granules, but is a regional player in the European market. However, the acquisition is a first for Avebe, as it gives the company access to the potato flakes and granules market. "With Solan, we are accelerating access to knowledge and experience in processing potatoes into flakes and granules and their sales. We can expand our product portfolio and thus further shape Avebe's growth," CEO David Fousert said in a statement.

Good opportunities in potato cultivation
According to Avebe, flaked potatoes have gained ground in the potato market in recent years. By adding flakes and granulates to its product portfolio, the company can better meet customer demand. The Solan brand, which the Polish company carries in its product range, will remain.

Avebe also sees good opportunities to further develop potato cultivation in Poland. Solan collaborates with approximately 140 arable farmers and has a regional network for raw material supply. The Dutch company sees potential with its variety package for, among others, the breeding company Averis, a wholly owned subsidiary of Avebe. Solan has a production site in Głowno, Poland. There are two production lines: a flake line and a granulate line. The company employs over 100 people.

The amount involved in the acquisition has not been disclosed. The acquisition is a remarkable step for Avebe, as the cooperative company has not made any acquisitions in recent decades.

Never heard anything about it at a meeting, I thought they'd learned from it in the past. They should have built a flake line here, something I brought up 10 years ago; at least the growers would have benefited. That's probably their story now, but if they lose, we're welcome to contribute again, of course.

Well, why not build here years ago? It would have been cheaper and we, as Dutch growers, could benefit!
