The French growers' association UNPT presents its first estimate: the average potato yield is below last year's level. Due to a record-high acreage, total production is nevertheless higher, while prices in the early segment are under pressure. UNPT warns growers against selling at knock-down prices, urges strict adherence to contracts, and emphasizes mutual quality obligations. Read what this estimate means for the market balance, contract dynamics, and alternative sales channels, plus our scenarios for the remainder of the season.
The estimate is based on the initial harvest results. Combined with a record acreage of 197.000 hectares, the growers' organization calculates an expected harvest volume of 8,5 million tons of table potatoes. This means the production of these potatoes is approximately 900.000 tons higher than last year.
In the early segment, potato prices have fallen to almost €0. The growers' organization calls the current situation "The industry at zero euros." "Growers mustn't fall into this trap. Refuse to supply at these knock-down prices. The market is under pressure, but at this stage, it still offers some prospects."
Respect contracts
The growers' organization is urging buyers to honor their contracts. "Contracts ensure economic stability in this situation, but only on the condition that no revisions or withdrawals occur. Furthermore, no additional pressure should be placed on inspections. Unfortunately, we have seen these kinds of excesses in recent months."
"Respect must also be mutual," the growers' organization adds. "Growers must deliver quality that meets specifications. This is crucial for the value of the commodity." The organization promises growers full support to ensure that contractual obligations are strictly enforced. The union will also work to develop alternative outlets for potatoes not covered by contracts.
