In France, they're eating considerably more potatoes at the start of the new season than they did last year. Supermarkets, in particular, are benefiting from increased consumer interest.
Last year, research by the promotional organization CNIPT showed that significantly fewer potatoes were eaten at the beginning of the season. This year's increase is therefore primarily a recovery compared to last year. Compared to two years ago, there was still a slight decline.
Between August 11th and September 7th, the volume of table potato purchases increased by 5,2%. While specialty stores lost ground again, supermarkets sold 6,6% more than a year ago. Discount stores, in particular, saw their sales increase.
Special offers, in particular, have helped boost sales volume. CNIPT concludes this from the fact that sales of larger quantities have increased. Sales of 5-kilo bags of table potatoes are almost a quarter higher than last year. On the other hand, bags of 1 or 2 kilos of potatoes also sold well (+20%).
Lower prices than last year
Normally, 2,5-kilo packages of potatoes are the most popular, but sales actually dropped by 20%. Potatoes were selling for an average of €1,19 per kilo. This price is a quarter lower than in the same period last year. 5-kilo bags are selling for prices 30% lower than a year ago.
The most popular variety in the first part of this season is the Colombia in 2-kilo bags. Sales of these potatoes accounted for 8,5% of total table potato sales in France in August and early September. Last year, the Colomba in 2,5-kilo bags accounted for over 10% of total sales.
Other best-selling varieties include Jazzy, Amandine, Agata, and Cherie. Jazzy is especially popular in 0,5-kilo packages (5%). In 2-kilo bags, Amandine, Agata, and Jazzy all account for 4% or slightly less.
French fry potato production has expanded significantly this year in France, but the supply of table potatoes is also more than sufficient. Supermarkets are selling more potatoes than last year thanks to promotional campaigns.
