The potato acreage in Austria is shrinking by 10,2% this year, with declines in all segments. The supply of early potatoes, in particular, is decreasing sharply. Read more about the potato acreage in Austria.
According to this analysis, the cultivation of table potatoes falls below 10.000 hectares again for the first time in two years. A contraction of 9,8% brings the acreage back to 9.551 hectares.
After table potatoes, starch potatoes account for the largest area within the total acreage. Starch cultivation decreases by nearly 14% to 4.515 hectares. The production of consumption potatoes for the industry declines the least, by 4,5% to 3.637 hectares.
Early potato cultivation is shrinking the most. The area of early varieties is decreasing by 18,8% to 838 hectares. This brings the total potato area to 18.541 hectares, compared to 20.657 hectares in 2025.
According to statistics agency Eurostat, Austrians harvested a total of 813.000 tonnes of potatoes last year. Compared to 2024, this represented an increase of 17%. Nevertheless, production was lower than in 2020, when 886.000 tonnes were harvested.
