Potato planting in Northwest Europe has accelerated significantly in a short time due to better weather. The acreage is largely in the ground, with clear differences between countries. Read more about the progress of potato planting.
During the season, Aviko monitors the progress of planting on a weekly basis in the Netherlands, but also in Great Britain, France, Belgium, and Germany. The British got off to a flying start after Easter but were subsequently overtaken by growers on the European mainland.
In Northwest Europe, the changeable weather before Easter kept the planting machines in the shed. When the weather improved in early April, planting started quickly.
In the Netherlands, significant progress was made, particularly during the last full week of April. By the end of week 16, approximately a quarter of the potatoes were in the ground; a week later, this had increased to nearly 70%. Before the rain of last weekend, planting operations had already progressed to over 90%.
According to Aviko's overview, the French are the furthest advanced, with only a few plots where planting has not yet taken place. In Belgium, too, only 5% of the acreage is still awaiting seed potatoes. The British were initially the fastest; work is progressing steadily there, but at a slower pace than on the European mainland.
