Potato stocks in Germany are significantly higher due to a large supply, while sales are under pressure. Quality issues and alternative sales channels are playing a larger role. Read more about potato stocks in Germany.
The difference is greatest for table potatoes: stocks are nearly 80% above last year's level. Stocks of processing potatoes are more than 50% higher than in May 2025. As a result, volumes across all segments remain at an exceptionally high level.
Sales under pressure due to high supply
In absolute terms, comparable quantities of potatoes have been sold this season as last year. However, the large harvest in particular is causing clear sales problems. Batches of lower quality, in particular, are struggling to find a profitable destination.
Just as in the Netherlands, surpluses in many German regions are increasingly being diverted to animal feed or biogas production.
Some regions have smaller stocks.
However, there are also regions where stocks are less problematic. In Baden-Württemberg, stocks are only slightly above last year's level. There, quality problems are particularly noticeable. Diseases, including damage caused by the leafhopper, have led to more visual defects and a higher proportion of losses.
In Hesse, stocks of ware potatoes have been largely sold (approximately 90%). The remaining volumes are expected to suffice to supply the market until the new harvest, which is expected in about six weeks.
