Illegal seed trade in the crosshairs at Breeders Trust

14 March 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn - 4 comments

Watchdog Breeders Trust is on the trail of the illegal seed potato trade. The organization reports that several traders are active in illegally buying and selling licensed varieties. The watchdog warns growers and seed potato trading houses to be alert to this.

"We have heard from various sources that there are several traders who are going to buy licensed varieties. They buy the varieties protected by plant breeders' rights and sell them directly to the consumption growers. It concerns the varieties of 4 trading houses," says Geert Staring. , general manager of Breeders Trust.

Traders on the track
Breeders Trust has also sent out a warning to trading houses and growers affiliated with the watchdog. The organization has already tracked down several traders and warns specifically for 1 trader. "We warn the trading houses that potatoes are hidden behind their backs. There is a return obligation, but the growers of these trading houses are still cooperating in illegal trade," says Staring.

The growers who participate in this are also warned. For example, the selling contract growers will be prosecuted for an infringement of Plant Breeders' Rights and violating the contract conditions. Consumption growers who buy seed potatoes without certificates are also being prosecuted for illegal trade.

It's about a cargo of Marquis that was offered somewhere in Belgium apparently. How stupid can you be as a seed potato grower.
Again a lot of noise and little action from Breeders Trust, as usual.
