The Netherlands will reassess glyphosate

15 March 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn

The Netherlands is prepared to carry out the re-evaluation of glyphosate in collaboration with France, Hungary and Sweden. This is stated in a news item from the Board for the Authorization of Plant Protection Products and Biocides (Ctgb).

The European Commission (EC) proposes that the countries do the reassessment together, given that a large file is expected. Normally, the reassessment is carried out by 1 country and that country is then given the role of Rapporteur Member State (RMS). However, in the case of the glyphosate dossier, no country was willing to voluntarily assume the role of RMS.

However, the EC proposal to allow member states to jointly fulfill the role of RMS has yet to be discussed in the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (SCoPAFF). This is expected to happen on Thursday 21 or Friday 22 March.

Assessment Report
When the proposal is approved, the 4 countries will jointly assess the glyphosate dossier and jointly submit 2021 assessment report to the European Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (EFSA) in 1. The group of 4 countries will be named 'Assessment Group on Glyphosate'.
