The conventional carrot market has to process a lot of organic carrots. This is because there has been an oversupply on the market for organic carrots, which means that the price for organic carrots is currently the same as that of conventional carrots. This creates additional tension on the market for conventional carrots.
Expectations for the price of organic carrots were high due to the dry year. This was one of the reasons why a high price was maintained for ex-field carrots. This subsequently caused carrot consumption in Germany, for example, to be 20% to 30% lower. Ultimately, however, the yields turned out to be good.
Organic price equal to regular
The above means that there is now too much organic carrot. Various traders report that another 20.000 tons will come out of the cold stores before Easter and all of that has to be sold. In addition, there is already early organic carrot from Israel on the market. This means that organic carrots are now offered at prices that correspond to the prices for conventional carrots.
Since the pressure on the market for common carrot already increased, the additional supply from the organic sector is very inopportune. Several traders indicate that if a significant amount of carrots are not sold before Easter, too much will remain in the cold stores. Carrots are expected to be delivered from Spain in April.
