GPS theft affects multiple brands

24 April 2019 - Niels van der Boom - 3 comments

Farmers and contractors have been hit by theft of GPS systems again since the start of the spring work. John Deere is especially popular, but other brands are also being stolen.

While farmers and contractors are busy on the land, the thieves' guild is active again. At the beginning of April, a number of John Deere GPS systems were stolen in the province of Zeeland. Subsequently, companies in West Brabant were also affected, and theft is also reported in the North of the Netherlands.

At the beginning of April, various companies in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen were ravaged by GPS theft, and this is not the first time. In 1 night, from Tuesday 9 to Wednesday 10 April, 7 systems were stolen from John Deere. This happened at 6 different companies, such as wrote Broadcasting Zeeland. The damage: nearly $140.000 for the systems alone.

National problems
A few days later, it was also on Twitter notification made of GPS theft in the west of North Brabant. The thieves broke into the shed to take the systems. Again, it was systems from John Deere. The northern John Deere dealer Groenoord will report GPS theft on Wednesday 17 April. This time at companies in Siddeburen and Hellum in Groningen.

The manufacturer is now familiar with this highly undesirable popularity for their brand; GPS thieves are active all over Europe. The manufacturer recently released an update worldwide rolled out† After installation, the receiver (the well-known yellow sphere) is secured with a PIN code. The question is whether this is enough to deter thieves, but something is better than nothing.

Disassemble and store
A photo of a warning sticker has already appeared on Twitter, to draw the attention of the uninvited guests. However, the screen can be better secured via a special housing. However, the best measure remains to disassemble the bulb and screen and store it properly indoors. A simple tool shed is often easy to penetrate, so the right place is also important. It still happens too often that a system gets stuck in the cabin, for example when a tractor is irrigated day and night.

End of April reported a contractor in North Brabant GPS theft. All their systems from John Deere have been stolen. However, Raven also has to deal with theft. It warns users to be alert. Stolen systems are noted. If the modem comes online, the manufacturer immediately receives a signal and the system can be traced.
