Application of glyphosate further stripped down

23 April 2019 - Niels van der Boom - 16 comments

On Friday 19 April, Minister Carola Schouten (Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality) informed the House of Representatives about motions regarding crop protection. These motions include glyphosate, diquat and neonicotinoids. The answers support the earlier 'Future vision for crop protection 2030'.

Glyphosate is arguably the hottest topic in the crop protection industry right now. In this Letter to Parliament the minister informed the House of Representatives in response to a motion submitted by Tjeerd de Groot (D66). This motion was about limiting the use of glyphosate.

Fewer applications
The spraying of permanent grassland, a 'pre-harvest spraying' and the annual application of the weed remedy (calendar spraying) are listed as applications that can be eliminated. Glyphosate should only be used within an integrated approach. Minister Schouten endorses dropping the applications. She sees chemical crop protection as a last resort.

European member states are currently re-evaluating all products containing glyphosate (about 50 products). The Board for the Authorization of Plant Protection Products and Biocides (Ctgb) is the rapporteur for the European Union and expects to have completed the studies by the end of 2019. Speeding up decision-making, which the House would like to see, is not possible, according to the minister.

Transition Period
The implementation program for the 'Future vision for crop protection 2030' must provide clarity about a future in which glyphosate can be used less or not. Mechanical or ecological weed control must offer the alternative. The minister wants to make agreements for a transitional period. Consultations are also being held with initiatives announced, for example, by FrieslandCampina and Natuurmonumenten. They already want to reduce or stop glyphosate use.

Last year, Nature Network Brabant known that glyphosate may no longer be used on leased land in this province. The municipality of Den Bosch also came into the news with similar measures. The municipality wants to discourage tenants of municipal land from using the substance. The local parties demanded that the municipality also do something against the sale of glyphosate to private individuals, but the city council sees no point in that.

Answers to other resources
The minister also sees mechanical as the answer when the drugs diquat and thiram disappear. Research by Wageningen Economic Research (WUR) shows that mechanical and thermal control (burning) has a limited negative effect on soil life. However, the influence on the insects is highly variable. Mechanical control is only destructive for breeding field birds.

The letter to parliament also extensively considers questions from Helma Lodders (VVd) about raising MRLs for 8 active substances, including the neonicotinoid clothianidin. Despite the fact that this substance is completely banned in the European Union, treated product from outside the Netherlands may be treated. The minister says he is not responsible for the application in other countries. This also applies to an exemption for neonicotinoids-treated seed (Cruiser SB). She considers it insurmountable that this creates unfair competition.

is not insurmountable, only the will is not there

It is quite possible, but it will be a challenge with Carola's cuddly agricultural policy. Since I modern plow my roundup usage has increased considerably.

emotion politics 23 April 2019
These messages show once again that Carola and lnv make policy based on assumptions and emotion. Reality and position in relation to the rest of the world is completely out of balance. We are already leading the way and if Carola gets her way, the agricultural sector will be over and the Dutch farmer will be at the back of the line on world markets. Pretty antisocial to act like that. Food is the primary necessity of human life. You should not mock that in order to realize your own leftist ideals.
Highly productive soils are slowly shifted to organic soils and yields. While the climate and infrastructure are just in order in the Netherlands.
I have other ideas about sustainable entrepreneurship. But yeah

Oh well, fuck everything here, but everything about the fence, we import the food anyway, what can be sprayed on it is Schouten not responsible for... how hypocritical.

Schouten does not yet understand that sustainable plowing also includes weed control. And a broad range of resources to resist diseases. Should she become minister of health, she will ban all medicines. Look how fast she has to step down...

Sputter sputter complain complain.
Don't nag people. As an exporting country, we produce far too much.
This is the perfect way to start farming more extensively.

Pigs sank 15 years ago.
Now that phosphate rights are tons per cattle farmer, the majority of dairy farmers will wait a little longer and sell and cash in.

Arable farming will soon remediate much too expensive land and far too many old people. Unsustainable!! Now that a discouragement policy is in place, many farmers are clearing up.
Mission accomplished

The entire European society is ageing. Not just the arable farmers in the Netherlands

A mechanical alternative to fungicide thiram?
peer 27 April 2019
you can spray dead your grassland and plow it after 7 days, then it will not turn yellow and the citizen will not see it and the effect is already there
because that yellow grass does it for him

"Mechanical control is only destructive for breeding field birds"
And we have more than enough, don't we?
When will they learn there that every advantage also has disadvantages, I haven't mentioned CO2 yet.
Jos 27 April 2019
Burning is the alternative???? How destructive to all above-ground insects and small animals!!! Then the number of insects will certainly decrease by 90 percent in the coming years. mechanical ??? Get rid of the meadow bird stock and those black smoke-emitting tractors have no effect at all on nature and CO2 emissions! However???
Bram Fox 27 April 2019
Good grace, the good minister and policy officers are pretending that organic food is the solution, under pressure from the greenpeace and the like.
Drama, after 5 hoes there is no meadow bird left I think.
I'm really annoyed by that guy's attitude. Pretending to be Jesus, that's why Schouten likes it.

Incomprehensible,. that we are unable to turn this emotion politically. As a scientist up your alley, his affairs with politics are such an agenda item. If a science does not fit the bill, it is pushed aside. And that is exactly what is going on in the left of the Netherlands. It is also for this reason that the extremes in our country are increasing. Because D66 and Gr Links are just as extreme as PVV and Forum.
They all play with emotion and not with reason. The worst thing about parties on the left is that they also by definition think they are right and are very derogatory of people who think differently. What is also very dangerous is that the economy is always in last place at these clubs. And Emotion with a dash!

Short and very good articulation of the contemporary.
flaming 28 April 2019
That emotion politically applies to all of Western Europe and will only be reversed if they are hungry or if the food is very expensive.
Unfortunately, this is not yet for tomorrow because many colleagues think that they have to produce more and more on a starvation wage.
