Water board asks to report irrigation

29 April 2019 - Niels van der Boom - 6 comments

The Hollandse Delta water board (WSHD) on the South Holland Islands asks farmers to report if they are going to irrigate. This will be done early this spring, in order to help the crops emerge.

The reason for this voluntary notification requirement is that the water board can then provide sufficient water in the ditch. However, this is only possible if it is indicated in time that irrigation will take place, such as writes it.

Little water supply
River discharges are currently very low, which also affects water quality. The water board notes that farmers are concerned about the availability of water in the coming months, because it is again (or still) very dry.

Timely notification of the ditches from which water is extracted helps the water board to plan the supply. Anyone extracting less than 20 cubic meters per hour is not obliged to report. Those who extract up to 300 cubic meters per hour must report this at least 24 hours before watering. This is a commitment† If you want to extract even more, you need a permit from the water board.

salinization
One concern is the salinity in the water. If there is too little water that is loaded, the irrigation water in the polders becomes salinated. If water is nevertheless irrigated when there is little supply, the ditches will mainly be filled with saline or salt seepage water.

Last year, the Hollandse Delta water board deployed extra pumps to supply the polders with extra freshwater. At the time, there was no irrigation ban on the South Holland Islands.

@schoenmakers1 we don't get any further with these kinds of comments.. it arouses mistrust, it has a polarizing effect, it ultimately leads to rumors and untruths. It is a pity that so many fellow farmers during coffee and behind the keyboard immediately fall into the victim role of everyone is against us. Do you think that the people in the police, care, politics, education etc. do not get buckets of shit on them every day and never do it right? Look at it positively: The water board is clearly engaged in its task and obligation and it is true that we also contribute significantly through water board tax. Otherwise, in a few months it will be easy to say that the water board has done nothing about drought or, who knows, extreme rainfall. Times change and we have to keep each other sharp, but from a positive constructive attitude please, then we are decisive!

Dear student. Well, I will already say that the water board is not doing anything about the floods that are coming again, in the polders I don't know, but in the so-called dry sandy areas where they could do it all plant roots were destroyed by the water all winter too high, this means that there is a high chance that several plants will die when the water goes to the normal summer level. In addition, they have still not solved the problems of flooding in 2016, where it became clear where the bottlenecks are, but they are again fully committed to the flooding policy, if the damage is there, there are more legal costs to get out of the claims if all compensate damage.
Then you call that the politicians get shit on them, well to me it's very normal that the culprits of this misery are blamed for it, and the police, who enforce the wrong policy are just as guilty as the other enforcers who do this cooperate, that you call this a victim role, is more due to the fact that you do not know what it is, than anything else, that you call your student also indicates that you are too far removed from practice, and that you regard education as getting loads of shit on them is also only because they don't want to know the truth, and thus send the students in the wrong direction.

Just heard from a water board meeting, the land owners are the least important group in society for the water board, certain population groups have heard this more in the past, it did not end well then either
