Arable farmers send fire letter to Schouten

30 April 2019 - Niels van der Boom - 14 comments

Royal Cosun, LTO Nederland, the NAJK and the Dutch Arable Farming Union (NAV) have jointly issued a fire letter verzonden to Minister Carola Schouten (Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality). In this they address 2 major challenges for arable farmers: the current situation in sugar beet and the foundations under the authorization of glyphosate.

Sugar beets are currently struggling, partly due to the lack of a seed coating with a neonicotinoids. Especially on the heavy clay soil, beet crops are heavily affected by insect pests. As a result, broad spectrum insecticides are used, which do more harm than good for the environment.

Visiting a grower
The damage caused by insects is sometimes so bad in individual cases that beets have to be sown. The writers and the arable farming sector are disappointed that the ban leads to such environmentally harmful matters. They therefore call on Schouten to visit an affected company and see the problem for themselves. They hope to find a solution together for the coming year and the further future.

Another major concern for the industry is the use of glyphosate. They fear that this herbicide has met the same fate as the neonicotinoids. This relatively environmentally friendly herbicide is then replaced by products that are more harmful to the environment. In addition, fully mechanical weed control is a utopia, it is written.

Science should dominate
The parties want to contribute ideas about the reduction of glyphosate use. The sector has already taken a first step with pre-harvest spraying in pulses. In both cases they see scientific knowledge as the foundation and not the emotion. Glyphosate fits in well here.

After all, we are Carola Schouten's guinea pigs.

They might as well send the letter straight to the shredder.

Schouten, then we should also ban those substances

Oh hey, the lto club will go back to work together with najk with the work that farmer consciously has done.

These farmers have only clearly visualized the discussion with their twitter campaign!

Prohibition of neo dinges is a drama for beet cultivation and environmental benefit is nothing.

Our civil servants suck us empty.
Time to get up and take things more seriously.

correct LTO always imitates others. read yesterday that they are going to conduct an investigation to see whether it is necessary to promote farmer-citizen communication.

good night LTO

sleep well Mr President

In any case, they are trying to keep resources allowed if we leave it to the minister for horse and cart agriculture, we get a yield drop per ha of 50 to 90% then
the canal belt mafia will pay 100% more for the ned food package. because importing produces too high co2 emissions and residue levels do not meet the standards of aldi and the jumbo. the kcb has not checked the batch for the residue du levels
The intention is that Dutch agriculture becomes a tourist attraction

It sounds crude what Bildtboer says, but he is right.
It seems that they want to regulate population growth in this way.

Unfortunately Mrs. Schouten does not have a letterbox. All in vain.
CU is also left!!

Stopping beet cultivation is the only remedy, because no one can sustain production below cost. Fortunately, cosun only has 2 more factories than they have to close four. Growing grain normally means you lose less and you have better soil left over. If you now have to look at those sad plants on the field, you will lose heart.
