Irrigation ban a month earlier in the Veluwe

June 4, 2019 - Niels van der Boom

The Vallei en Veluwe Water Board has imposed an abstraction ban for part of their area for irrigating with surface water. The irrigation ban will come into effect on Wednesday 5 June. Water may still be extracted from part of the work area.

It is the third water board that has a withdrawal ban has set. A lack of precipitation causes surface and groundwater levels to fall. After last year, stocks are very low. Water boards try to respond to this at an early stage.

Exceptions
The areas where the Vallei en Veluwe water board can let in water from the IJssel, Nederrijn or Randmeren are exempt from the ban. The list with all polders can be found on their website. It is mainly the higher sandy soils that have a very low water level. Since evaporation is increasing, in combination with an increasing precipitation deficit, the water board is forced to take measures.

The ban is intended to supplement the groundwater level and prevent the deterioration of water quality. In addition to farmers, private individuals, sports fields and industry are not allowed to extract surface water. Last year, the water board only introduced an abstraction ban on 2 July.
