The Limburg water board reports that from Friday 7 June it will apply an abstraction ban for sprinkling with water from streams and ditches. It is the fourth water board to have imposed an irrigation ban.
With this ban, the water board wants to prevent the water level in streams and ditches from falling further. In addition, the ban must ensure that the water supply is sufficiently replenished by the summer. Exceptions to the ban can be found on the website of the water board.
"Despite the fact that the weirs have been set to the summer position in winter, in order to retain as much rainwater as possible, the discharge of streams continues to fall and the groundwater level is still historically low. The expectation that relatively little precipitation will fall continues. We must therefore ensure that we retain everything in our water system," explains Har Frenken, director at the Limburg water board.
Fourth water board
The Limburg water board is already the fourth water board in the Netherlands to impose a ban on the use of surface water this year. The Vallei en Veluwe water board imposed an extraction ban on Tuesday 4 June for† Earlier, the Brabantse Delta water board announced a ban in parts of West Brabant. At the beginning of April, the De Dommel water board already proposed a watering ban for grassland.
