Hot air from the African continent caused temperature records in Europe to be broken several times last week. In week 27, the summer in the Netherlands slows down a bit, but other countries are unable to escape the heat wave.
There is a heat wave in Limburg and parts of North Brabant. The heat wave started first in the Arcen region: on June 22. A heat wave is expected to continue on the first day of July, with temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius. Then it's over with the heat. There was no question of a national heat wave, because it was cooler in De Bilt.
Highest temperature ever
In Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, France and Switzerland there was a total heat wave, often accompanied by record high temperatures. In the south of France it was over 44 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature ever recorded in the country.
High temperatures will also continue in week 27 in the middle, south and central part of Europe. It will decrease slightly halfway through this week, only to rise above 30 degrees Celsius again by the weekend. In countries such as Spain, the south of France and Italy it remains as hot as ever. A drop of precipitation may fall in the northwest, but this is not much.

Potato market reacts violently
The extreme weather caused the arable markets to move. For example, the potato futures market was in a roller coaster† On Monday, July 1, the market opened at a price of €16,50 per 100 kilos for the April 2020 contract. On Friday, June 28, the EEX closed at €15,60. A glimmer of hope for some rain then drove the price down.
The grain harvest, which started last week in the European Union, is also affected by the weather. Last week, the Matif in Paris did not show that, given the falling prices. The European Commission lowers their forecast for the European wheat harvest by 1,5 million tons to 142,3 million tons. This is due to the hot weather. Many crops are now in the crucial stage of grain filling. Hot and dry weather is negative for the yield.
grain harvest
The winter barley harvest has started cautiously in the northwest of the country. In the south of France this has already been completed and the first parcels have been threshed. The yields are 2 tons higher per hectare, compared to last year. The first reports from Germany are also positive. Growers in Flevoland who Boerenbusiness spoke harvested slightly fewer kilos this year and especially a lot of straw. Due to the high temperatures, the crop matures more quickly.
