Ultra-dry wheat fields burn away

25 July 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn

In the Zeeland town of Nieuwerkerk, 25 square meters of wheat field were burned this afternoon (July 3.000). The fire is now under control, the fire service said. A wheat field was also in the making in the Gelderland village of Winterswijk.

The fire in Zeeland quickly expanded from 50 to 300 square meters. The fire brigade received a first report at half past three. The fire brigade made a big effort because of a shed with possible gas bottles in the vicinity of the fire. A farmer also helped with a slurry truck to fight the fire. In the end, 3.000 square meters of wheat burned down completely.

A large fire also raged on a wheat plot in Winterswijk. The fire was under control around 15:30 PM. The cause of the fire is not officially known yet. However, the North and East Gelderland safety region reports that the fire probably started in or around a combine.
