Switzerland allows spray drones

6 August 2019 - Niels van der Boom

For many technology enthusiasts, spraying the crops with the help of drones is a new step in the application of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Switzerland is the first country in Europe to allow the use of these so-called spray drones.

Since the late 90s, remote-controlled helicopters have been used in Asia to spray rice fields that are otherwise difficult to access. Thanks to modern technology, the drones can do their work autonomously and fly down a marked path in order to spray plots. Their capacity is limited, but in certain circumstances it proves added value.

Helicopter replacement
Farmers in Switzerland can be the first to use the technology. After 2 years of squabbling, the government has amended drone legislation so that drones may be used for spraying crop protection products. It should be noted that it was already permitted to spray from the air with manned helicopters. Something that is mainly done in mountain areas, for example vineyards.

The company Agro Fly applied for a license to fly spray drones 2 years ago and has now received it. Up to 30 kilos or liters of substance may be transported with a drone. However, this drone must follow its flight plan accurately to 50 centimeters and always be in sight of the driver. Research has shown that the drift of a drone is no more than that of a manned helicopter, and usually less than with existing techniques.
