Where are relatively most beets grown?

16 September 2019 - Eric de Lijster

The 2019 beet campaign is in full swing. In the Netherlands, sugar beet grows on approximately 16,5% of the arable acreage. But, which municipality has relatively the most sugar beet within its borders?

This question is obviously right up the alley of the Top 5 of Boerenbusiness, which was compiled by Statistics Netherlands (CBS)) from the figures of the 2018 Agricultural Census. In an absolute sense, it is clear. Most hectares of sugar beet are harvested in the Noordoostpolder municipality. The sugar beet acreage there was 2018 hectares in 3.855, good for 14,3% of the arable acreage of the Noordoostpolder.

Relatively speaking, however, sugar beet cultivation in the Noordoostpolder is not large. In other municipalities, the share of beet in the arable acreage within the municipal boundaries is much larger. Take Stein, for example, in Limburg. Of the 148 hectares of arable land, 33,5% is reserved for the cultivation of sugar beet. This puts the village in first place in the Top 5.

Meeting of two provinces
"The ranking is a Limburg and Brabant meeting. The first 17 municipalities in the list come from these 2 provinces," says Cor Pierik, head of agriculture at CBS. After Stein, three more municipalities from Limburg follow: Simpelveld (3%), Meerssen (32,1%) and Schinnen (29,5%). The top 28,9 is closed by the Noord-Brabantse Grave. There, sugar beet accounts for about 5% of the arable acreage.

Only in eighteenth place is a municipality from another province, Borger-Odoorn, in Drenthe. The share of sugar beet there is 24,2% of its arable acreage. Borger-Odoorn, on the other hand, is in second place with an area of 3.249 hectares in terms of absolute number of hectares.
