The Broad Weather Insurance is exempt from insurance tax (1%). The cabinet has received permission for this from the European Commission.
This arrangement costs the Dutch treasury about €7 million per year, according to the tax plans presented on Budget Day. According to the Dutch government, this insurance will become a lot cheaper against extreme weather conditions.
Experts estimate that the exemption will mean that approximately 9% more farmers and horticulturists will participate in the comprehensive weather insurance. Lowering the damage threshold will lead to 0% to 30% more participants. A higher number of participants often leads to lower premiums.
Subsidy reduced
However, the subsidy on the insurance is reduced. From 1 January, participants will therefore receive a smaller part of the premium costs back. It is still unclear how much less it is. However, according to Jan Schreuder, director of Vereinigte Hagel, this percentage is negligible.
