Sugar content in beets relatively high

26 September 2019 - Kimberly Bakker

The sugar content in the beets appears to be relatively high this season, Suiker Unie reported in a press release. On the other hand, the organization reports that the carrot yield will be slightly lower than previously expected.

Now that sugar beet is supplied from almost all areas, Sugar Union a good picture of the first signals about the yield. The organization keeps the sugar yield unchanged at 14 tons per hectare, but does write that the sugar content is relatively high. This week it will be 16,5%. On the other hand, the carrot yield is expected to be lower than previously expected: 82 tons per hectare.

still dry
Suiker Unie reports that it is still dry regionally. The company sees many similarities with last year in the east and south-east of the Netherlands, given that the amount of precipitation here again varies greatly: from a few millimeters to sometimes almost 100 millimeters. "Some plots were even irrigated last week. It seems that growth is lagging behind the rest of the Netherlands," it writes.

It also reports that lifting the beets from the hard soil is not easy either. "A (too) high speed results in extra beet loss, the slack and withered leaves are also difficult to completely remove," concludes the organization.

Infestation by cercospora
Furthermore, it is reported from all areas that the infestation by cercospora has further expanded. According to Suiker Unie, this expansion is the result of the infections in recent weeks. "The seriousness of this can increase due to the accelerated death of leaves. A spraying has little or no effect anymore," it warns.
