NAV started founding Producers Organization

7 October 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn

The Dutch Arable Farming Union (NAV) has decided to set up a Producers' Organization. Recognition for the producer association is requested from the ministry. The NAV calls for growers to join.

The NAV takes the initiative and is supported by United Growers Akkerbouw (VTA). The recognition procedure can take a maximum of 4 months. The aim of the Producers Organization for Consumer Potatoes (POC) is that it will have sufficient size at the start of next season to play a significant role. The POC will function separately from the NAV and VTA. In addition to the application for recognition, the NAV is also setting up a provisional board and is recruiting members.

Legally more possible
The NAV decided to take this step after consultation with trading companies, the processing industry and the Ministry. The fact that legally more is possible than previously thought also plays a role in the decision. This is apparent from research by legal agricultural consultant Maria Litjens. Boerenbusiness interviewed her about this before.

According to Litjens, the PO does not have to arrange sales for the members. Growers who want to join can work together and make agreements with each other. In doing so, they can continue to follow their own sales strategy. The NAV calls on growers to join in order to be stronger in negotiations with customers.
