Propane shortage causes storage problems in US

6 November 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn

The harvest in the United States is very wet, but that is not the only problem for American growers today. There is a major shortage of propane gas, which causes problems when drying products such as grains and potatoes, among other things.

American farmers are running into many problems this season. The spring in the United States was extremely wet, causing parts of various American states to be under water. That ensures that the harvest very late is. In addition, the country is now again struggling with a lot of rainfall and sometimes even snow. This leads to the harvest entering the barns wet. As a result, there is currently a lot of demand for propane (especially from arable farmers), writes Reuters.

Insufficient transport
In the meantime, however, citizens and livestock farmers also need propane gas, including for heating houses and stables. The latter is also given priority over the drying of products. All in all, there is still sufficient supply of propane gas for now, although transport can no longer keep up with demand. The price of propane gas has already risen by about 20% in October.
