The 8-fold increase in the standard for PFAS is good news for the arable farming sector. In combination with the fact that the Manufacturer's Own Declaration (FEV) for tare soils can be used again, this makes it possible to move tare soils.
The standard goes from 0,1 micrograms of PFAS per kilo to 0,8 micrograms. If the PFAS standard in the soil remains below this limit, soil may be moved. Due to the standard of 0,1 micrograms, tare soil could not be removed from, for example, the processing industry.
Certified drain
It is also important for the sector that certified discharge via the FEV is possible. Minister Stientje van Veldhoven (Environment and Housing) gives in a Letter to Parliament indicates that this will be possible again specifically for potatoes and sugar beet.
André Hoogendijk, director of Branche organization Akkerbouw reacts positively: "It is good news for the sector that the minister states that an FEV for tare soils can be used again. Together with the higher background value, this should make it possible to use tare soils again."
Exact effect
However, he is curious about the exact effect. "The letter to parliament refers to the amended temporary action framework, which was published on Sunday 1 December. "We are curious about the elaboration of this letter in the updated action framework. In the short term, this should provide clarity about how we can work with tare soils in agriculture, but also in applications for construction and industry. The continued circulation of arable land is an important part of operational management in the arable sector. We are pleased that the government is paying attention to that.”
