The announced dry period did not materialize in recent weeks. As a result, the sugar beet harvest is further delayed. Suiker Unie reports that about 20% of the acreage still has to be grubbed up.
Harvesting activities have now resumed, which means that the percentage that is still cleared should be shrinking day by day. At the start of this week, a fifth of the acreage was still in the ground, which amounts to 17.000 hectares, which is a lot for this time of year.
It is reported from various regions that many beets are expected to be on the heap by the end of this week. Suiker Unie reports that in some cases there is insufficient space to store the sugar beets. Repositories must first be cleared.
Tare percentage increases
In terms of quality, the Numbers hardly different from the previous weeks. The average sugar content fluctuates around 16,5% and was 16,4% last week. A slightly increasing line can be seen in the percentage of tare. It came in at 13,6% last week. The tare percentages range from 9,9% in Central Limburg to 19,6% in the Haarlemmermeer.
Growers are advised by Suiker Unie to closely monitor the temperature of the beets in storage. This is ideally between 0 and 10 degrees. Beets with more tare, leaf remnants and/or damage run an increased risk of extra sugar loss. IRS has already had a report of a lot of beets with a temperature of 14 degrees. Of approximately 60 beet heaps spread across the Netherlands, online to monitor the temperature.
