There will be no ban on the use of glyphosate in Austria from January 1, 2020. The reason is a formal error. The proposal should have been submitted to the European Commission for notification.
Austria announced last summer became the first member state of the European Union to completely ban the use of glyphosate. A decision that in principle goes against the law; plant protection products approved at European level cannot be officially banned by individual Member States. They may, however, restrict its use.
big frustration
Despite this, Austria's glyphosate ban would come into effect on January 1, 2020. However, such legislation is subject to the mandatory information procedure. The draft had to be sent to the European Commission in advance and that has not happened, says Chancellor Brigitte Bierlein. Much to the frustration of some political parties and NGOs in the country.
Whether there will be a new procedure for a national glyphosate ban in Austria is still unclear. Meanwhile, other European member states are also planning a ban. Germany has announced glyphosate will be phased in the coming years to banish and has set the year 2023 as the deadline for this. France will also ban a large part of glyphosate products by 2022.
Use in the Netherlands stripped down
The use of glyphosate is also under pressure in the Netherlands. There is much debate about whether the drug is carcinogenic. As a result, the application of glyphosate has continued to grow in recent years stripped down† However, at the European level, the authorization of glyphosate has been extended for another 2017 years in 5. Use after December 2022 will again require a majority of votes in the European Commission.
