Light pollution a major cause of insect deaths

24 December 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn - 16 comments

Light pollution is a major cause of insect mortality. This is evident from a review of 150 scientific studies on the decline in the insect population. Preventing light pollution can therefore be an effective method to slow down the decline.

There is a greater decline in insects in areas with more pollution from artificial light the researchers† This is partly because the insects are attracted to the light and therefore form perfect prey. One of the other reasons mentioned is that the natural rhythm of the insects is disturbed, which is negative for reproduction, among other things.

About half of all insect species are active at night. Yet it is not only these species that are disturbed by light. Daytime active species are also disturbed in their nighttime rest. According to the researchers, light pollution covers a quarter of the world's land area and therefore has a major impact.

Simple measure
Although light pollution is sometimes overestimated as the cause of the decline in insects, according to the researchers, it is very easy to switch off unnecessary light. "As a result, the decline of insects can be greatly reduced by such a simple measure," according to the researchers in theguardian.com† LED light can also be a solution. This light can be easily adjusted in less disturbing colors of light. Blue-white light resembles daylight, and therefore has the most influence on insects, while green light, for example, is much less harmful.

The researchers propose that there should be a national light reduction target in England. This should be enshrined in law. In addition to light pollution, causes such as a smaller available area for insects, chemical pollution and invasive species are mentioned.

Not just agriculture
While intensive agriculture is often cited as the main cause of insect deaths, this research shows that other factors are also an important reason. The decline in insect populations was reported in another global research underlines: 40% of insect species would be threatened by extinction.

So it's not just spraying that is harmful.

All those farmers with all those work lights are also the cause
Joost 24 December 2019
Then I propose an obligation of green light on tractors and combines. And a ban on all other light.
Christmas: festival of lights.
Kiwi 24 December 2019
shit how am i supposed to spray illegally in the dark? Then go on GPS with the lights off!

Kiwi, kiwi.
The government can track any GPS signal, so turning off your light is pointless.
Agriculture has always been seen as the biggest insect reducer and so you can see that there are completely unforeseen causes with often a greater impact than agriculture.
But we don't want to see that.
Possibly there are still many causes that we do not know yet,
West Brabant 24 December 2019
What about the sensitivity of insects to all possible communication signals?
Skirt 25 December 2019
Ideal at night with the light on to fight lice with the trigger. Very environmentally friendly without chemicals and with low costs.

Have you ever counted the flies on your car in a summer day? Now multiply that by 12.7 million and this is without foreign cars.
Jp lapwing 25 December 2019
All chemical GBM products that have an N number are more than 120% safe. No bee deaths boxwood moths and great tits are caused by flea tires.

It's just a shame that fipronile is still used on pets
cagri 25 December 2019
@westbrabander: there are already many studies that make this link (eg For bee deaths) but everyone uses these signals and the country earns millions with the allocation of network rights alone...so much better to blame the farmers, you get also easier with the crowd.
NOS fake news? 26 December 2019
And of course this message cannot be seen on NOS.nl. Apparently there were more important topics that day (ahem).
But as soon as a possible link between agriculture and insect mortality is found somewhere, NOS will be first in line.
@anne jan: do you have good connections at NOS, and can you ask them to report this topic after all? Then they might also get rid of their anti-agricultural image.
John Bolks 26 December 2019
Of course we can also take this into account at home by not leaving lights on unnecessarily, but what about all those billboards and shop windows that also have less power? All the way in the evening/at night??...
kees 26 December 2019
what about seeing all those greenhouses 30 km away with all that light
Glass 27 December 2019
Do I understand that correctly: Will there be a light pollution standard for workers?

Cabinet is apparently coming to light now that advisory lobbyists are on vacation and there is nothing left to grin in the dark.

Ps number of flies on cars Id dropped dramatically in the past 10 years, in addition to many cancer patients longevity pension funds, possible comfortable causes that no lobbyist suffers from: light.

how stupid can you be
Mozes 27 December 2019
Oh they now also want to expropriate gardeners after nitrogen standard!

Farmers are awake, are you?
ik 27 December 2019
the public broadcaster is busy putting a jihad bride on a pedestal because they are much more important than our farmers. at least with our left-wing broadcasters.
