Suiker Unie, part of Royal Cosun, has completed its 2019 beet campaign. The average carrot yield is higher than in the 2018 harvest year, but the average sugar yield is not achieved.
Saturday, January 18, the factory in Dinteloord will have the last sugar beets processed† In Groningen, the last beets were already rushed through the factory on Monday 13 January. This also makes it possible to draw up the balance for the 2019 harvest. It was again an extreme season with a cold spring, lack of the neonicotinoids seed coating, drought and finally a wet autumn. This resulted in an average of 12,2% tare, compared to 8,5% in 2018.
Less sugar
The average carrot yield for the whole of the Netherlands is 83,9 tons per hectare. That was 76 tons per hectare a year earlier, when the drought hit even more. The average sugar percentage is 16,3%, compared to 17,4% in 2018. The past cultivation year will therefore be remembered as a lean sugar year. The weather conditions are partly to blame for this. After a long dry period, many beet crops started to grow again. That also took a lot of sugar.
Lower levels
This brings the average sugar yield to 13,7 tons per hectare. This is 3,5% lower than the multi-year average of 14,2 tons per hectare. In some regional areas, the average sugar content is even slightly lower. A content of 16,8% (Walcheren and Texel) turned out to be the highest achievable in the campaign. The WIN came in at 89,6 points on average.
