Slightly higher beet price expected for 2019 harvest

12 February 2020 - Anne Jan Doorn - 2 comments

Growers expect a slightly higher beet price than last year. This is evident from a poll on Boerenbusiness.NL. The majority expect a price between €35 and €37 per tonne.

Of the 532 voters, almost 40% expect the price to reach this level. It is an amount that is very close to last year's payout price (€35,59). Just under 20% of voters expect the price to be slightly above this (€37 to €39 per tonne).

On the other hand, almost a quarter of voters expect the price to rise significantly: they expect a price between €39 and €41. Added up, the vast majority of growers expect the price to go up anyway.

Realistic expectations?
Only a small proportion expect the price to fall, or exceed $41 each. Expectations for a higher price are not unrealistic. Good expected results at Aviko and an improved sugar price provide a good basis for this.

It will be a downer then, because the sugar content was on average not 17% last season. And I don't see 35-37 happening in 17% either.
But we'll see next week

True sugar.
The average beet price that the growers receive does not only depend on the sugar price on the market.
The sugar percentage this year is about 16,3%. Last year 17,4%.
Extractability will be approximately equal to 89,9.

1% less sugar means about 3 euros less per ton! That counts.
