Storm Dennis hits British farmers hard

20 February 2020 - Anne Jan Doorn

While storm Dennis has not had any major consequences in the Netherlands, the consequences for farmers in Great Britain are catastrophic. This is due to severe flooding.

Hundreds of farmers have been evacuated FGinsight. The storm continues to affect the whole of Britain today. Large areas have already been flooded and heavy showers are still planned for the rest of this week. In total, 100 millimeters of rain is expected in large areas of Wales in the coming days.

Wales and West England have been particularly affected. This has major consequences for arable farmers in these areas. “The winter crops are my cash crops, and they will all have to be reseeded in the spring. Moreover, the question is when we can go back to the fields in the spring," says a farmer from Herefordshire, for example.

Consequences for next season
Because there has been a lot of rain in Great Britain for months, there is a lot of damage to the plots throughout the country. According to arable farmers, the costs of bringing the fields back into good condition are enormous. Moreover, as a result of Brexit, farmers will receive agricultural subsidies for a period of time, as a result of which some of them have run into financial problems. It is expected that, among other things, the potato yields will be less next season due to poor soil quality.
