After onions and beets, potatoes are now also in the ground

6 April 2020 - Erik Colenbrander - 1 reaction

Despite the great uncertainty caused by the corona crisis, little seems to be going on in the country. If all goes well, the irrigation can stop for a while after next weekend.

The potato growing season kicks off this week across the country. The planting of starch potatoes has also started in the Veenkoloniën.

For starch potato growers, the construction plan assessment is less uncertain than for chip potato growers. Some have started planting potatoes in the hope of better times. Although after 2 full weeks of consultation it is still not known whether there will be a chip potato arrangement, and if so, with what content. This causes great uncertainty about the correct implementation of the construction plan.

By comparison, concerns about a lack of moisture in the top layer of the soil are dwarfed. Because in many places onions and beets have to be irrigated to prevent germination taking too long.

The KNMI calculates approximately 5-10 mm showery rain over the Easter weekend. But it is still very early to calculate the precise amount of precipitation. In any case, this is one of the most difficult tasks for meteorologists: predicting the precise amounts of precipitation in a showery and relatively warm weather type. It is certain that with the start of the growing season and increasing evaporation, the rainy season will start again. The first 'summer' storm clouds of 2020 may be visible this Easter weekend.
