Suiker Unie will start drying French fries potatoes in the sugar factory in Groningen from 1 June. This allows the company, like Aviko, a subsidiary of Royal Cosun, to store the product for longer.
According to the news site Hoogkerk Online, this is a one-off activity that will last until the end of August. Trucks deliver the washed potatoes to the sugar factory in Hoogkerk. After cutting, the potatoes enter the pulp dryer of the factory. The dried potato pieces can then be stored longer and can be used in, for example, livestock and pet food.
Suiker Unie reports that the potatoes are processed, dried and disposed of immediately as much as possible. In doing so, an odor may arise that is not common in the area for the time of year, as it falls outside the sugar factory's campaign. Approximately 55 freight movements per day will be required for the supply of the potatoes and the removal of raw materials.
