Province of North Holland bans the use of glyphosate

28 May 2020 - Jeannet Pennings - 9 comments

Farmers who lease land from the Province of Noord-Holland are no longer allowed to use glyphosate on it. From 1 November, a ban will apply to the new lease contracts.

The ban on the use of glyphosate on provincial land is included in the amended lease policy of the province of Noord-Holland. On plots within the Netherlands Nature Network (NNN), the use of the weed killer was already prohibited.

European ban threatens
Glyphosate has been under a social magnifying glass for years because of the alleged harmful effects on humans and animals. A European ban threatens, but glyphosate still has a permit until January 1, 2023. Despite this, the use is in different countries already (phased) restricted.

Other governments are also introducing a glyphosate ban on their lands, including now the province of North Holland. “The EU will evaluate use in 2022. We don't want to wait for that,” says deputy Esther Rommel. “We are doing our utmost to protect biodiversity in our province. This ban helps with that. We want to control weeds as much as possible with mechanical or ecological techniques.”

Before the judge
Previously, Staatsbosbeheer, among others, already imposed a glyphosate ban on 40.000 hectares of leased land. A ban was also included in the lease agreements for 2020 of the municipality of Gilze en Rijen in North Brabant. However, this requirement was rejected by the Ground Chamber declared illegal† The ban on the use of glyphosate would limit the tenant's freedom of exploitation too much. In a similar case in the province of Noord-Brabant, the province has appealed against the decision of the Ground Chamber. The judge ruled in favor of the province.

People are derailed! It already starts with potato storage control, you can't do that anymore. Potato fatigue will strike sooner, making seed potato cultivation more difficult.
Bad policy from such a lady. Will probably never come to the field to let her hands work, so she probably doesn't know what she's doing with her political decision.
Stupid, because again a piece of the export that we all benefit from is being cut back. Not just farmers, but also the supply companies and everything related to it.
Congratulations society!

Yes and all nix-based gut feeling and green lobby kicks it way this way.
I had hoped that the Corona crisis was the rock that would turn the ship, but it doesn't look like that yet.

You are not obliged to sign such a lease, are you? If no one signs, the province will also have a problem.
So farmers, just force this demand off the table by NOT signing!

And the green deal is yet to come.
What about biodiversity in cities and industrial zones?
Agriculture must rectify what goes wrong there.

why not start with a private ban? After all, most of it ends up in surface water...
So the province should ban all DIY businesses from selling

Get used to it, all brakes are loose and it will get much worse...
Mss offer an excuse to society in the long run that we as farmers have ruined the environment and nature for years?? Wouldn't surprise me if it got to that point.

The largest user is the NS because the track must remain clean
and the consumer can benefit from it too. but some extra in the tank because it should help
