No exemption required for beet delivery obligation

20 July 2020 - Niels van der Boom

Sugar beet growers who do not expect to supply all their LLBs full this year and who therefore cannot meet the delivery obligation do not have to notify Cosun Beet Company. This only applies if the grower has sown sufficient acreage, reports the former Suiker Unie.

Many sugar beet fields had to deal with a difficult turnout this spring. Drought threw a lot of spanner in the works, but also dust and hail damage. The plant numbers are therefore not always high enough for a good yield. Anyone who thinks they cannot meet their delivery obligation of 850 kilos of sugar beet (with 17% sugar) does not have to indicate this. In previous years, an exemption had to be requested early.

Cosun Beet Company sets 1 condition for this adjustment. Sufficient sugar beets must have been sown. This means that the acreage must be larger than the delivery obligation of 2020, divided by the average yield over 5 years. The worst and best year do not count. Growers who have sown less must apply for an exemption and substantiate their situation.
