A week ago, Jan Cees Vogelaar and Jaap Haanstra put themselves forward as new president of LTO Nederland. A vast majority of readers of Boerenbusiness likes this duo, as it turns out a poll which has been voted almost 900 times.
When asked whether Haanstra and Vogelaar and Haanstra should become the new chairmen of LTO Nederland, 79% of the respondents responded with 'yes'. The duo advocates 1 strong farmers' and horticulturists' lobby, they said in response to their candidacy.
Both gentlemen strive a flat and efficient farmers' organization. They also see a role for LTO in the Agricultural Collective. Apparently these points of view appeal, because the duo is seen by three quarters of the respondents as connectors in the fragmented advocacy.
Call for President-elect
Furthermore, the poll shows that 4 out of 5 voters are for an elected chairman. Until now, the LTO leader was always nominated, but this system is being discussed internally in the context of support. For the time being, Vogelaar and Haanstra are the only ones who have publicly put themselves forward for the presidency.
LTO Nederland has indicated that it will take until November to find a successor for Marc Callon who resigned early in May. As the procedure now prescribes, the selected candidates will be nominated in mid-October to the Members' Council, which will then vote on them in November.
