Carrot prices good, kilos bad

31 July 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The carrot market is in a stable situation. The supply is poor and the demand is fair to good. For the time of year this results in high prices for B and C carrots. This also compensates for the poor yields of early sown carrot plots in the Netherlands.

C-peen prices will drop slightly this week. Traders are in the dark in that regard. A competitive battle in trade is a possible cause. In addition, it is currently the holiday season. Such a period always ensures a somewhat calmer situation within the carrot trade. The fact that prices are lower is remarkable given the poor supply of carrots at the moment.

Lockdown affects C-peen
The poor supply of large carrots is mainly due to the early sown plots that are currently being cleared in the Netherlands. The condition of these plots is moderate to poor and the grading in particular is failing. This purely has to do with the growing conditions of the season. The fact that the prices of C-peen have fallen slightly is due to the corona measures. It should not be forgotten that the C-carrot market is a different market than the B-carrot market. C-peen mainly focuses on the catering industry, which is suffering enormously from the consequences of the corona crisis. This may therefore also influence the demand for C-carrot.

Export
Our carrots are too expensive for Africa, one of the destinations for the Dutch carrot. Africa gets carrots from countries such as Morocco, purely because the prices of carrots in the Netherlands are currently very high. Senegal, also a destination for Dutch carrots, benefits from the country's own carrot production.

DCA Pean Listing
The DCA quotation of carrots shows a price drop in the C carrot this week. C-carrot currently has a range of €27 to €33 per 100 kilos. This week's average is €30 per 100 kilos and has dropped by €2,50 compared to last week.

B-carrot, on the other hand, shows a slight price increase in the DCA quotation. With a price range of €32 to €35, the average increases by €1 compared to last week to €33,5 per 100 kilos of B-carrot. Traders are talking about a stable situation with few kilos and high prices, which will certainly last for another 2 weeks. The expectation is that the plots sown later will emerge with better kilos and better sorting.
