Sugar beet yield does not reach average

5 August 2020 - Niels van der Boom

Cosun Beet Company expected that this year an average of 82 tons of sugar beet per hectare will be harvested with 13,8 tons of sugar. This expectation is 3% below the 5-year average. The 22-2020 campaign will start on September 2021.

Over the past 5 years, an average of 14,2 tons of sugar per hectare has been harvested. This year it is therefore estimated to be 400 kilos less. However, change could still take place in the coming months. The beets really need rain now, especially on sandy soil. The first crops are already sleeping.

Campaign starts 2 weeks later
Cosun will start both factories on Tuesday 22 September. Next week (week 33) growers will receive the final campaign layout. The start is more than 2 weeks later than in 2019. Then the beet campaign started relatively early, on 6 September. Because the yield expectations are moderate, the cooperative has decided to start harvesting later. The company hopes to be able to process the beets for 18 weeks.

At the end of July, Cosun already made known that no exemption is required for the delivery obligation, as a result of the drought. Sufficient acreage must have been sown in order to make use of this.
