For whom in the Netherlands ammonium nitrate?

7 August 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 2 comments

Member of Parliament Henk Krol (formerly the elderly party) wants to know from the State Secretary for Transport, Public Works and Water Management whether it is true that large quantities of ammonium nitrate are stored at the Zeeland fertilizer factory of Yara and OCI in Geleen, Limburg.

In these factories, ammonium nitrate is made as a loose raw material and then processed into CAN and urean (artificial) fertilizer.

Total overview where and with whom
Krol asks the parliamentary questions because of a report from the Telegraaf following the enormous explosion in the port of Beirut on Tuesday 4 August. Krol wonders how much ammonium nitrate is stored in total in the Netherlands at which companies and at which locations. Are local residents informed and how is the safety of the staff guaranteed?

Problems identified?
The MP wants a detailed overview of the inspection procedures regarding safety and storage and the frequency with which these inspections take place. If bottlenecks have been identified at companies that store ammonium nitrate, Henk Krol wants to know which bottlenecks this concerns and how they have been dealt with.

According to Reinier Gerrits, representative of Meststoffen Nederland, the Environmental (Environmental) Service, the Safety Regions and the SZW Inspectorate are closely involved in supervision and enforcement, and the fertilizer industry is very aware of the risks.

Terrorisme
There is also increasing attention for the risk that terrorists can misuse fertilizer raw materials. In 2018, 100 kilos of fertilizer were found in two men who were arrested in Arnhem and Weert, on suspicion of plotting attacks.

there are very strict rules in this warehouse
you are not allowed to play with open fire
grinding welding engines with gasoline engine are not allowed in you are not allowed to smoke
had to grind and weld in this shed for 15 minutes but that was not allowed to disassemble the machine that took 4 hours to adjust something and go back in and tinker for 4 hours to get it ready
was a shed in antwerp
