All early sown carrot plots intended for this time of year yield far too few kilos. It has been leading to a shortage of supply and high prices for several weeks now. The supply no longer only comes from Limburg and North Holland, the first plots are also being cleared in the regions of Flevoland and Zeeland. Especially in the latter province, the supply is significantly lower due to a difficult growing season.

Heat predicted
Traders report meager yields ranging from 30 to 50 tons per hectare. With the increasing number of plots ready for harvest, the picture of scarcity should slowly change. However, the predicted heat in the coming weeks could have a major impact. The relatively early plots have already had a difficult spring and are now having an extra hard time.

Where supply is meager, demand is still strong. In addition to the domestic market, demand comes from neighboring countries such as Germany, England and Ireland. In addition, overseas exports to Africa are slowly starting. Some traders notice that the higher carrot prices are also an obstacle to broad sales.
