Carrot price drops, trade on low

4 September 2020 - Kimberly Bakker

There is not much to report on the carrot market this week. Trade is calm, both within Europe and to overseas destinations. The limited supply doesn't help either. Prices are therefore again taking steps down this week.

It is fairly quiet on the carrot market. Trade is slowly starting, but it is more difficult than in other years. This is partly due to the lower yields. It is estimated that approximately 20 tons less will be taken from the land this year than in previous years. There are many problems due to drought, especially in Belgium, Germany and Northern France. In addition, exports are not yet running smoothly.

All eyes are on Africa
The export of carrots to overseas destinations (such as Senegal and Cape Verde) continues, but is not necessarily good. Because the price was high at the beginning of the season, these destinations (mostly destinations in Africa) started looking for alternatives. According to traders, we now have to pay for that a bit.

By the way, this does apply to the market Senegal has only just opened. Usually this market only really gets going in mid-September. Another factor is that we have to wait and see how carrots, shipped during the warm period, will arrive in Africa. There are some concerns about this here and there. Another concern is the fact that all eyes are on Africa this year. Last year there was also some demand from Eastern Europe, but that is not the case this year.

Where will the price drop to?
As a result of these developments, Peen's DCA listing will also decrease this week. The quotation of B-carrot amounts to an average price of €20,50 per 100 kilos, with a price range of €18 to €23. At C-peen the average price is €17,50 per 100 kilos, with the range varying from €15 to €20. Exports are expected to pick up again in the long term now that prices are falling further.
