De DCA Arable Farm Index was unable to keep it dry in August. Despite the fact that a new quotation for seed onions was put on the plates in Emmeloord, the sector barometer still went down. The potato market turned out to be a struggle.
A quotation of 80 index points in week 32 (beginning of August) was the highest quotation of that month. Due to dry (and especially hot) weather, the price of the April contract on the EEX potato futures market flared up to a level of €8,70 per 100 kilos. The downward trend later that month, with a low of €6 per 100 kilos, has left its mark on the DCA Arable Farm Index. The month ended with 67,8 points.
At the end of August, the Agricultural Fair in Emmeloord put the first quotation for yellow seed onions on the plate: €12,50 per 100 kilos. This has not had a positive effect on the Index. The price for European fodder wheat was the only one that managed to rise steadily. The level of €190 and above was again reached.
Continued harvest season
The arable sector has thus started a new harvest season with very negative sentiment. Only in the year that the Arable Farming Index was founded was the price (56,3 points) much lower. The difference with the 5-year average is now 19,3 points. Looking at this average, recovery is noticeable from the beginning of September, when more can be said about the final yields when the potato and onion harvest starts. Whether this will also happen this year remains to be seen. Because of the corona crisis, everything is different.
