Brazil has overthrown the United States in soybean exports to the Netherlands. In 2019, almost half of soybean imports came from Brazil, significantly more than the year before. Imports from the South American country will also increase significantly in the first half of 2020, CBS reports.
In the first 6 months of this year, the Netherlands imported 1,6 billion kilos of soybeans from Brazil. This is 40% more than in the same period last year (more than 1,1 billion kilos). This means that 65% of the total soybean import comes from the South American country. This is partly due to the fact that the harvest of the crop in Brazil takes place in the first half of the year.
Imports from the United States fell by 19% in the first half compared to 2019. In total, 0,67 billion kilograms were imported from the US. From 2014 to 2019, the US was the largest import partner for our country, for 2014 it was Brazil again. Together, both countries account for 82% of total Dutch imports. In total, the Netherlands imported 2,4 billion kilos of soybeans.

The Netherlands is the largest importer of soybeans in Europe. It is striking that our country imports a lot to either resell immediately or to first process and then export. A quarter of the import is immediately resold abroad. The majority of the imports are then processed in Dutch factories into soybean meal for animal feed products or into soybean oil for human consumption.
Some of the processed products then go abroad, just like the soya meal that the Netherlands imports. In total, we imported soy with a value of €2020 billion in the first half of 1,3. Exports and re-exports of these products were worth €1 billion in the same period. The main countries that buy our products from us are Germany, Belgium and the United Kingdom.
